Raycer in the Big Apple!
After being in New York City with my boys for only 5 minutes, I asked my brand new 6 year old what he thought of Times Square.
Since this was his first time there I was imagining his mind to be blown away by all the lights and activity of the city. He smiled and told me that he really thought it was cool but then his smile quickly faded and he quietly whispered to me, “But there is a lot of bad and naughty things here.”
I was shocked! This little boy had only been in Times Square for 5 minutes. I guess I thought most things would go right over his head because of his young age. He then described to me the inappropriate billboard he had seen and innocently asked, “Why would they put that up there for everyone to see?”
As my boys and I discussed this, I reminded them that our church put up a LIGHT THE WORLD billboard and it is the biggest one in Times Square! They immediately started shoving their chicken nuggets in their mouth so we could run outside to find it.
It didn’t take long for them to spot it. They were so excited to see Mary holding baby Jesus and so proud to see “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints” on the billboard for everyone to see. They told me that they hoped everyone would look at this billboard instead of the bad ones.
Darkness and LIGHT
How grateful I was last night that there was LIGHT among DARKNESS. That I could show and teach my children just how important it is to find the light… to BE the light.
The people who were behind putting the huge “Light The World” advertisement up in Times Square will never know how many hearts were touched because of the message it shared or how light was spread to other’s lives—like my family.
Like us, we will never know the extent of our influence. We will never be able to comprehend how important our light is to others around us. But we need to stand OUT. We need to have faith and hope that we can be a LIGHT in this world.
You can make a difference! Even if you are the only light in the darkness, as that billboard was to my family, you will stand out and shine brilliantly, radiating your warmth and love to all around you. You have the light within you— now let it burn.
